For this method, you don't need to turn the edges under. You would turn edges under for traditional hand appliqué, though.

Very good tutorial! I was under the impression you need to turn the edges under for applique. I've been struggling trying to keep them turned under. I'm cutting out trucks, etc and appliquing them on a block...do I just sew them on with raw edges? Thank you for helping me.

Thanks for reading! We do love that thread matching trick. Saves us from buying more thread colors all the time!

Our wool felt is stable enough without fusing to keep its shape. You could use fabric glue or any kind of glue stick to hold the felt in place while sewing around it. We use cotton thread and a cotton fabric background with great results. Sometimes, we embellish with embroidery floss or pearl cotton thread. We'll add this to the list of future tutorials!

Thanks for the tutorial. You mention appliqué with wool felt. Why don't you use a fusible adhesive with the wool? Do you use cotton thread? Also, is your background fabric also wool or cotton? I have been thinking about trying appliqué with wool but had these questions. Thanks for your help.
