Sprinkles Quilt Along: Week 2

This week in the Sprinkles Quilt along, we will be sewing together the top half of the cupcake. In the Piece & Love book, this is called making the candle and frosting sections.

First up is the candle section. It’s the easiest section of the quilt, since it uses the biggest background pieces. Here’s a quick progression video of this section:

Next up, make the Frosting Section. For this part of the quilt, label the lengths of the white frosting strips to make the layout a breeze. You’ll also need to make a couple of different variations of half-square triangles (HSTs). The first one is a pieced HST. Check it out in the video below:

Beyond this pieced HST, the rest of the piecing is very straightforward. Follow the steps in the book, making sure to double check the length of the white pieces, and you will be done in no time. One more tip for this section is to press seams away from the white fabric where you can. Our white fabric is slightly sheer, so the dark colors are more likely to show through.

Once the frosting section is complete, sew the candle and frosting sections together.

With the top half of the quilt top pieced, you are done for this week! Come back next Monday and we will start on the bottom half of the quilt. In the meantime, you can share your progress in a couple of different ways:

  • On Instagram, use both #sprinklesqal and #theclothparcel hashtags in your post. You can also tag us @theclothparcel.
  • In our private Facebook group, you can share photos in a post or in the comments of any of our posts. You can also ask for help or advice there!

See you next week!
