Make This: Folded Pinwheel Tutorial

We found the perfect thing to liven up your summer projects.  This folded pinwheel embellishment will work on anything that is pieced with a four-patch intersection.  For each pinwheel, you will need four 4″ squares.
Folded Pinwheel Step 1Fold each square in half diagonally and press with an iron.

Folded Pinwheel Step 2Once all four pieces are pressed, fold again as pictured below, without pressing:

Folded Pinwheel Step 3Make sure that each piece is folded the same direction to make the super cool pinwheel design.  Now you can add it to your background fabric pieces.  Note: The background pieces need to be at least 4.5″ to keep the points out of the seam.

Folded Pinwheel Step 4Glue, pin, or stitch each raw edge in place.  Assemble four-patch as normal.  Press the background and through the middle seams, but try not to press the pinwheel fold.  This will make it pop up and look three dimensional.

Folded Pinwheel Step 5Voila!  Wouldn’t this be the cutest thing to add to your next picnic quilt?  We used it for our fun Pinwheel Picnic Quilt Pattern using MaryJane’s Glamping fabric coming later this month.

  1. I really like the tutorial of the folded pinwheel, but I have a problem with the 4 1/2 inch square…I want the lines to line up with each other…because this would drive me crazy I would have to use a flower, or some other patterned material…anyways thank you for a really great tutorial!!!

    1. It is a little bit tricky, since you want the pinwheel to stick out on the front. If you press all your seams in one direction, either clockwise or counter-clockwise, it will help spread the bulk out.

  2. If I want to make a different size block – would I make the pinwheel squares 1/2″ smaller than the background squares?
