Make This: Sashing with Stars Tutorial
As you know, we have been working on our Little Playmates Quilt. We showed you the individual blocks last time, and today we’re going to show you a fun little trick with the sashing. This quick little quilting tutorial adds a little eight-point star in the intersections between the blocks. For this sashing, you’ll need four 2″ sashing strips (these will be the length of your blocks), one 2″ square for the center of the star, and eight 1.25″ squares for the points of the star.
Lay on of the 1.25″ squares on a corner of the sashing strip, as shown below.
Sew each of the squares on the end of each sashing strip on diagonally.
Trim each corner 1/4″ from the seam.
Repeat with the other corners.
Now, lay everything out together.
Sew on the sashing, and look at the pretty little star!

Does anyone know what the size of the star point squares would be if I wanted to make the sashing 2 1/2 inches instead of 2?
Hi Judy, if you are cutting the sashing 3″ wide (for 2.5″ finished), you would cut the star squares 1.75″.
Actually, I was going to make the sashing only 2 inches wide hence cutting the strips 2 1/2, but the 3 inch with 2 1/2 finished might work. Thanks so much!
Wish this was accurate…imagine my surprise when 1.5″ squares on 2″ wide strips yielded 1/2 between where the points overlap and the short side of the strip. Not cool…..back to the cutting board, literally. Probably would work on 2.5 inch strips.
The small squares should be 1.25″.
Well, I saved these directions knowing that I would use them on a wedding quilt I had planned. At that time, the small squares were listed at 2.5 inches so that is what I cut them all (48). When I started sewing, something did not look quite right and realized that I had a half inch instead of a quarter inch to sew to the large square. I then came back to this site to make sure I had copied right. I did – but it now has been corrected to a 1.25 inch square. Bummer, I now have to re-cut each little square. Sometimes you just assume too much.
