Valentine’s Mystery Quilt-a-Long #2

Valentine Mystery Quilt-a-Long Week 2Welcome back for week #2 in our Valentine’s Mystery Quilt-a-long!  If you missed week #1, click here to read about how to make all these blocks.  Today, we are taking you through the block layout for this sweet Valentine’s Day quilt.  Finished dimensions are 36″ x 36″.Quilt BlocksGather your quilt blocks: 5 “O” Blocks, 4 “X” Blocks, and 44 Dot Blocks. Valentine Mystery Quilt LayoutHere’s a diagram for the layout of the table topper.  The “X” and “O” blocks make up the center, then the Dot blocks finish everything off in a cute dotted border.Center Block LayoutArrange the center blocks as pictured above, OXO in the top row, XOX in the middle row, and OXO on the bottom.  Sew the blocks together into rows, then the rows together to form one big square.Center Blocks 2Center BlocksOnce the center is done, start laying out the top and bottom borders, each with 10 Dot blocks.Top and Bottom bordersSew the border blocks together, and they will be the same length as the center square.Top and Bottom borders 2Lay out the side borders, each with 12 Dot blocks, and sew them all together. Side BordersSew the top and bottom borders to the quilt center and press.  Next, sew the side borders to the center and press everything.
Valentine Mystery Quilt TopFinally, the quilt top is complete.  If you fuzz your eyes, you can see the hug and kiss design and an “almost” big heart outline. Valentine Mystery Quilt Top 2This quilt as a table topper should be generous enough to cover a large portion of your table center (unless you live with the giant in Jack’s beanstalk and have an extremely large table).  It would also make a cute wall hanging or baby quilt.   Or, the individual blocks would make a stunning set of X and O potholders.Valentine Mystery Quilt Top 3Get your sew on, because next week we will be finishing this project in plenty of time for Valentine’s Day.  Meet us back here next Wednesday for some fun final details.  Do take pictures because we will have some great prizes for those who finish and share before the end of January!  Tag us @theclothparcel and #valentinesmysteryqal on Instagram, or share in on our Facebook page, or in our group, Quilting with The Cloth Parcel.  signature

  2. This quilt is beautiful. I’ve always wanted to join a quilt along, but I never got around to it. Will you do this again next year? Thanks so much for sharing your pattern with us at Merry Monday. I look forward to reading about the quilt-a-long.

  3. It’s gorgeous! Some day I want to make a quilt, maybe when all the kids are out of the house and I have more time. 😉

    Thanks for sharing at #HomeMattersParty!
