Make This: How to Make a Quilt Label + Christmas Pattern Giveaway!!

*Giveaway Closed: Winners announced at the end of this post!*

Do you add a label to the quilts you make?  Admittedly, we don’t do this as often as we should.  By the end of a quilting project, it can feel like too much work once you’ve put so much time into everything else.  Of course, you should label any quilts that will leave your possession, whether it’s for a quilt show or when you’re giving a gift.  For your own quilts that will stay home, it’s also a fun way to remember when you made things.  Someday, someone will wonder about your quilts, so why not tell them in your own words?how-to-make-a-quilt-labelOur favorite method for making a quilt label requires the following supplies:

-A piece of white or off-white fabric
-A computer print-out or handwriting of what you want the label to say.  Things you may want to add: quilt title, your name, occasion, date finished, and extra sentiments.
-Permanent markers.  Our favorite markers to date are Pigma Micron Pens.  Sharpie Fine Point will also work, but they will bleed a little bit.
-Clear tape and a window or light box
-Iron
-Needle and thread

Tape the computer print-out and the white fabric onto the window or light box, with the fabric on top.  Make sure that your piece of fabric is bigger than your design, so you can turn the edges under later.how-to-make-a-quilt-label-1

Using the permanent markers, trace the design onto the fabric.  Instead of using a print-out, you could also freehand the writing in your own hand, which also adds a personal touch.  We like to use marker colors that match the colors in the quilt as closely as possible.how-to-make-a-quilt-label-2

Once the label tracing or writing is done, use your iron to press the edges under to the edge of your design.  I like to add a border around the words on the label, because it makes this part so much easier.how-to-make-a-quilt-label-3

Pin the label to the back of the quilt.  I like to put it in the lower right-hand corner.how-to-make-a-quilt-label-4

Using a whip stitch, sew the label on by hand with a needle and thread.  It’s just like doing binding by hand, but it really doesn’t take too long, as the label is relatively small.how-to-make-a-quilt-label-5

That’s all there is to it!  Add a label to your next quilt to add that final personal touch.  We do have a couple of other methods for making quilt labels, which we will show you in the future.

I would love this pattern for my grandson who loves Christmas trees! Thank you for the giveaway. Very kind

  1. I love both! I think I’ll go with Candy Stripes because of the potential to use different colors for a completely different look…more so than Woodland Wonder. 🙂

  2. They are both lovely! I would be thrilled with either one.

  3. Candy Stripes please. I just purchased Woodland Wander LAST NIGHT!! Story of my life – always a day late and a dollar short – lol. Very good label tutorial. I like to do mine on a 5″ charm square – fold it into a triangle and tuck it into the corner before I sew down my binding. That way I only have to slipstitch one edge.

  4. Woodland Wonder, Please. Quick question…I always used the HP quilt label program, and after they updated me to Windows 10, it doesn’t work. Had anyone else ever had this problem? Will use your technique now. Thanks!

  5. I am going with the Candy Stripes pattern. Yeah – Good choice. Thank you for being a part of the SMS Giveaway; the tutorial for a quilt label (great job) and giving us this chance to try and win. Wishing you Happy Holidays.

  10. I really like both of your quilt patterns. But I did see a deer on Candy Stripes table runner so this is the one I would like to win. Thank you for being a part of the SMS Giveaway and giving me this chance to win a pdf of this quilt pattern for myself. Wishing you Happy Holidays.
