Make This: Proof Positive Quilt Tutorial

It’s been far too long since we posted a quilt tutorial!  While this quilt is baby size, since we are gifting it to a friend with a sweet newborn, it is easy to expand in both directions for any size.  Another great feature of this quilt is that it uses 2.5″ strips, which are easy to find as precuts from lots of different fabric companies, or just cut strips from whatever’s in your stash.

We love the simple black and white color scheme, which is great for a modern gender-neutral look.  The contrast of the black and white is especially striking, but we could see this working with so many different color palettes.

Shall we get straight to it?  This quilt is pretty simple construction-wise.  All you need to do is:

  1. Cut the pieces out.
  2. Arrange into the pattern shown in the diagram.
  3. Sew each of the pieces in each horizontal row together.
  4. Press seams either toward the background color or the prints, depending which is darker.  This will make all of the seams automatically match up.
  5. Once the rows are sewn and pressed, sew the rows together.
  6. Quilt top done!

Fabric requirements for the baby size are 1 yard background fabric, and (12) 2.5″ strips for the prints.  We used strips and scraps for ours, so the fabric placement will not be exactly like the picture.  Once the quilt top is finished, you’ll need batting to fit (we were able to Frankenstein together some scraps for ours), 1.5 yards backing, and four 2.25″ strips for binding.  Here’s all the info on a handy little PDF for you to save and print out:

It’s really a great design for just about anything!  We did a sort-of plaid design with the walking foot quilting, by stitching 1/4″ from the seam on every other row both directions.  It looks great!

A few more fabric details on our quilt:

  • Background fabric is Moda Bella Solid PFD White.  It’s our favorite off-white background color, plus the PFD means it is preferred for dyeing, if you’re into that.
  • Most of the black and white prints are from Bonnie & Camille’s “Handmade” fabric line for Moda.  The other prints are from the “Hazelwood” line by One Canoe Two, also for Moda; Adornit’s “Flamingo Fever” line, and the owls are a Cotton + Steel print by Sarah Watts.
  • The binding is from the “Farmer’s Daughter” line by Lella Boutique for Moda.
  • The backing is leftover sample yardage from our Axis Quilt for Craftsy.  It is from the “Modern Hand Drawn” line.

We also used this same pattern concept for an easy quilted throw pillow, as another gift for a friend, which is a great option when you’re short on time.

  1. LOVE Hanna’s Houses. What is the fabric line for the blue & white houses quilt? I saw the houses done in Moda Sweetwater also.

  2. I enlarged the graphic on your cheat sheet, then treating the black crosses as background, I was able to plot my colours, on the white crosses.
Easy-peasy, so far … let’s see if it come together, so easily.

  3. I love this… I cant wait to make one.. Im thinking I might want it is a queen size. Thank you so much for sharing. ♥

  4. I’m a little confused….does it say how many blocks you’ll have somewhere? I suppose you REALLY don’t have blocks. Just trying to determine how many pieces of each size to cut of the black and white. I must be over-thinking it…..

  5. I’m confused. Cut all my pieces out and was laying them out to decide how I wanted it all arranged tonight. I think the pattern is missing a piece. The “L” shaped one you have 4 of on the pattern, I’m assuming are the side pieces but they seem to need another 2.5” block to complete? Just thought you might want to adjust that so ppl can cut them out when cutting their pieces instead of after. I’m excited to see how it all looks done and think it’s going to be so cute!
