Nordic Frost Quilt Along: Week 1

Are you ready to get started on the Nordic Frost Quilt? We sure hope so, because it’s time to begin our final quilt along of the year. For the next five weeks, there will be a blog post on Monday and we will make this quilt together. You can find this pattern in our Piece & Love book, as a downloadable PDF, or as a Paper Copy. As always, this first week’s task is to cut out all the fabric needed for the quilt.

We are using Moda fabrics for our quilt this time, from BasicGrey’s Jolly Good and Grunge lines. Here are the prints we are using:

Here’s a mockup of what our quilt will look like in this fabric:

Note that the Jolly Good fabric is an upcoming line from Moda, available in May 2023. You can get on a waitlist from Fat Quarter Shop here. (affiliate link) Here’s a quick time-lapse of us cutting some of our fabric.

You can see our process here: cut all the strips from one fabric at once with a large ruler, then switch to a smaller ruler to trim the selvages and make the crosscuts. We also start with the largest pieces first, which reduces the chances of wasting large amounts of fabric or running out if you make a mistake cutting.

We like to use small removable sticky labels to keep track of which fabric is which. This is especially helpful when the colors don’t match the diagrams in the pattern.

If you are using the Piece & Love Book, you will only be cutting width of fabric strips for the striped borders. They will be pieced and cut to length during Week 4.

If you are using the standalone Nordic Frost pattern, you can piece and cut the borders to length now, as instructed in the pattern, or save the WOF strips and wait until Week 4.

Once all the pieces are cut, you’re done for the week. Check back here next Monday for Week 2! In the meantime, you can share your progress in a couple of different ways:

  • On Instagram, use both #nordicfrostqal and #theclothparcel hashtags in your post. You can also tag us @theclothparcel.
  • In our private Facebook group, you can share photos in a post or in the comments of any of our posts. You can also ask for help or advice there!

See you next week!
