Nordic Frost Quilt Along: Week 2

This week in the Nordic Frost Quilt Along, we will finally start sewing! Since this is a more complex quilt than the rest we have done this year, we will be taking two weeks to get the piecing done instead of one. First up, you’ll need to make all the half-square triangles. This quilt utilizes the one-at-a-time HST method, which means you won’t have to do any squaring up. Here’s a quick video to show you how we make it even faster with diagonal seam tape (affiliate link*).

By using the diagonal seam tape, we avoid needing to draw lines on the back of any fabric. You just put the corner of the squares under the foot and line the other corner up with the red line. We also hold onto our thread tails on the first set of squares to keep the corners from getting jammed into the feed dogs.

After the squares for the HSTs are sewn together, you will trim the corners off with a 1/4″ seam on one side of the stitched line. We batch this process by stacking the HSTs in a staggered line and then trimming multiple units at once. It doesn’t matter if the seam is 100% accurate, so it’s not too stressful and it saves a lot of time.

This process can also be used to trim flying geese and square-in-a-square units, or any other block that uses the stitch and flip method.

Once you finish the half-square triangles, make the flying geese units. We have always used stitch and flip for these blocks, since you don’t have to do any trimming. You do need to be careful with where your stitched line is, though. Make sure to stitch just outside of the diagonal so that your block doesn’t end up too small.

We always start stitching the diagonals in the middle of the block to keep the corners from getting sucked into the machine. Flying geese can be tricky, but a little bit of practice goes a long way!

Once you have made the flying geese in both sizes and the double flying geese, make the square-in-a-square blocks and the star block. The star block will use some of the HSTs that you just made, so it goes together quickly.

The instructions for all of these units and block are found on pages 47-48 in the Piece & Love book or Steps 1-6 in the Nordic Frost pattern.

Don’t they look so cute all together? We especially love those tiny little double flying geese blocks. Once you have these units made, you are finished with Week 2.

Check back here next Monday for Week 3! In the meantime, you can share your progress in a couple of different ways:

  • On Instagram, use both #nordicfrostqal and #theclothparcel hashtags in your post. You can also tag us @theclothparcel.
  • In our private Facebook group, you can share photos in a post or in the comments of any of our posts. You can also ask for help or advice there!

See you next week!
