Peaks: a Log Cabin-Inspired Mini Quilt

“Peaks” is a mini quilt that we created in response to a challenge issued by Curated Quilts.  The details of the challenge were to create a log cabin-inspired mini quilt, measuring between 10″-16″ on each side.  They also provided a color palette to stick with.  “Peaks” measures 13″ x 13″, to give you a little bit of a sense of scale. After shopping our stash, we were able to find everything we needed!  For this mini, we made tiny blocks that are like one corner of a log cabin block.  Each of those tiny corner squares measures 3/4″, with each block ending up 3″.The overall look of the blocks reminds us of mountain peaks, which is what inspired the name.  We chose straight line quilting for this quilt, using the lines of the quilt as a guide.  This view of the back shows the quilting a little bit better, which also reminds us of mountain peaks! These little flamingo heads were perfect for a little bit of fussy cutting. The binding was sewn by hand, since it’s so tiny.  We also wanted to preserve the points of the blocks, which is difficult to do with machine binding. What a fun challenge!  The mini size was great, because it gave us license to play without sacrificing a lot of time.  It was also nice to have some color parameters that were a bit different from our usual vibe, which stretched our creativity in amazing ways!
