Quilts We’ve Made: Dwell Block Swap Quilt

dwell-block-swap-quilt-2We got all of the blocks from our Dwell Block Swap a month or two ago, and we couldn’t wait to put it all together!  We had 18 blocks by the end of the swap, and since the original Dwell Quilt only has 16 blocks, we had to improvise a little bit to get everything to fit.dwell-block-swap-quiltWe ended up making two more blocks, so we could do five rows of four houses.  The extra two blocks we made are the light blue 9-patch and the green Quarter-Square Triangle in a box.  Here are some close-up shots of all the different houses.  We love the variety!dwell-quilt-2 dwell-quilt-3 dwell-quilt-4Since the five rows of four houses were so skinny, we added two charm pack borders in white sashing using Bonnie & Camille’s new Handmade line.  It reminds us of a sidewalk or stepping stone path, which fits right in with the neighborhood theme.  The quilt finishes about 56″ x 75″.dwell-quilt-5We quilted this with swirly loops on Audrey’s Bernina with the stitch regulator foot.  Great for when you can’t get to a longarm!  The backing is a print from the Vintage Picnic line, and the binding is a coordinating Pat Sloan print.  It’s the only print in the quilt that isn’t Bonnie & Camille!

dwell-quilt-backIf you look closely, you can see a couple of spots where bright white background fabric snuck into the mix from another project.  Oops.  We didn’t notice until it got into natural light, so it wasn’t a big enough deal to us to rip everything apart.  This was one of those quilts where everything seemed to go wrong, with tension issues, border issues, bobbin issues, fabric issues, you name it!  We can guarantee that this is only finished now because it’s so cute and fun, otherwise it would have ended up in the Works-In-Progress pile for an undetermined amount of time.  Even with it’s quirks and imperfections, this is already a favorite quilt!signature

    1. The Dwell Quilt is a pattern from a book by Camille Roskelley (Thimbleblossoms). For the swap, we changed out the center part of the block using tutorials from Jen at Heritage Threads. I didn’t make most of these blocks, so I don’t have information for all of them, but you should be able to make something close with both of those resources.

    1. The Dwell pattern is in “Simply Retro” by Camille Roskelley. I believe she has also written a standalone pattern called Dwell 2, but I’m not sure if it’s the same dimensions as the original.
