Sprinkles Quilt Along: Week 4

It’s hard to believe that it’s already the fourth and final week of the Sprinkles Quilt Along. This one really went by quickly! We love making these smaller sized quilts, and this one will be finished just in time for a couple of birthdays we have coming up this month. It’s going to make the cutest table topper!

First order of business this week is to prepare your quilt backing. We used one of the original Starry prints by Alexia Abegg of Ruby Star Society. While this particular color is a few years old, Ruby Star has introduced Starry as one of their basic lines, so now there are lots of colors to choose from! You can find all of them at Fat Quarter Shop (affiliate link*).

Once the backing is pieced, layer the quilt top, batting, and backing and get started quilting. Since this quilt has a lot of background space, we loaded it on our long arm for a little bit of custom quilting treatment. We ended up doing pretty much the same quilting style as the original quilt: meandering loops in the background, swirls in the frosting, and vertical lines in the cupcake wrapper. Here’s a little video we took during the process:

And here’s how it looked right after we trimmed it off the quilting machine. The lighting really shows off the quilting.

Once the quilt is trimmed and squared up, it’s time to add the binding. We love the print we chose for the binding. It’s super fun and cheery. Here’s a video of cutting the binding strips. You can see how we square up the left edge of the fabric with the help of a second ruler. This step has saved us so much time and headache not having to flip the fabric around constantly! We’re using OLFA’s 6″ x 24″ frosted ruler here (affiliate link).

We are still loving our Binding Eaze tool for pressing binding (affiliate link). It’s just so much faster than how we used to do it. Check it out in the video below.

Once the binding is pressed, attach it to one side of your quilt. If you want to sew the binding down by machine, start by sewing to the back side of the quilt. If you would like to finish your binding by hand, sew it to the front side of the quilt. Either way, we like to press the binding toward the other side of the quilt before we finish sewing it down. This just helps to make the binding process go smoother.

You may know by now that we almost exclusively do machine binding, and this quilt is no exception. Using a walking foot really helped our machine bindings look better, so if you have one we suggest using it for this step.

Here she is, all ready for the party! Let’s take a closer look.

It looks almost good enough to eat with all those yummy colors and quilting. This will definitely add a festive feel to our next birthday celebration.

We would love to see your quilt! You can share your project with us in a couple of different ways:

  • On Instagram, use both #sprinklesqal and #theclothparcel hashtags in your post. You can also tag us @theclothparcel.
  • In our private Facebook group, you can share photos in a post or in the comments of any of our posts. You can also ask for help or advice there.

As we mentioned last week, the Nordic Frost Quilt Along is coming your way on November 28th! The Nordic Frost quilt pattern is found in our Piece & Love Book and as an individual pattern. Be sure to snag a copy and start finding fabric soon. This quilt along will last five weeks instead of four, since it is the most complex of the quilts in the book. This will be our last quilt along this year, and likely for the foreseeable future. We’ve been quilting up a storm this year, and quite frankly we’re ready for a bit of a break!
