Supplies Needed:
-1/2 yard quilting cotton fabric; Cami used Yellow Dots from the Hello Sunshine line.  You will get about 9 yard of bias tape.
-Sewing machine
-Iron
-Bias Tape Maker (Optional, but this tool is AWESOME! It can be purchased at any sewing store.  I bought mine at Joann’s for $7.99 with a 50% off coupon.  Making it $3.99.  That is nearly the price of a pack of bias tape, but now I can make my own out of way cuter and better quality fabric.)

Constructing Double-Fold Bias Tape
192Unfold fabric and press flat if necessary.
204Take right bottom corner and fold over to other edge, creating a triangle.
205Take bottom left corner and fold to top right corner to create an arrow shape.
206 207Take the point of the arrow and fold it up to the top left corner.
208Continue to fold fabric in the same direction.
209 210Cut just enough of the bottom folded edge to cut off folds.
211 212Cut 2″ strips.
220 221Match up angled edge at a 90 degree angle and sew together.  Allow a little overhang, like in the picture, so the strip will be continuous and match each other. Continue sewing strips together to make one very long strip.
222Press down seams so they lay the same direction.
223 226Push one end of the continuous strip in the bias tape maker.   It makes it easier to pull the fabric if the seams are pressed the same direction you are pulling the bias tape maker.
227Then just follow behind the maker with a hot iron.  Alternatively, fold each side to the middle and iron.  This creates the single fold.
228Next fold tape in half with the raw edges on the inside.  This creates the double fold.  Now sew onto your projects!

  1. This is the most clear and concise bias tape tutorial I have seen yet. I may take out some fabric right now just to practice immediately. MANY thanks.

  2. I dont understand the last comment ( on folding the fabric)
“Continue to fold fabric in the same direction.” Do you mean as if you were wrapping it around a board or what?

  3. it was great. At 74 I don’t always remember the steps to get it done. Great to have help. My June Tayloe Shape Cut is a great tool to use with this fold. Thanks again. I need 22 yds of binding.
