Modern String Block Quilted Pillow

Recently, we’ve had a bit of a break between deadlines, so there’s been more time than usual for other little projects.  We’ve taken this time as an opportunity to sew up a couple of gifts for friends.  Today’s pillow was made for Audrey’s friend Erin, as a birthday present.Although it’s been given to someone else, she has similar tastes in color and design to us, so this pillow fits perfectly within Audrey’s front room decor. For this pillow, we used strips of varying widths and sewed them together into four string blocks.  It was supposed to have a sort-of improv look, like the blocks we shared here, but the strips were already cut straight, so they actually turned out quite square.

As we shared on Instagram, this is our method for making sure the strips we cut are long enough for the square.  We were using 9.5″ squares, so we lined each strip up and used a square ruler to cut lengths.

For the back, we chose a coordinating Cotton+Steel print from the Clover line and did a simple fold-over closure.  And you bet we made sure the print was going the right way! We love the variation in width, color, value, and texture.  We opted for no binding on this pillow, so as not to distract from the overall effect. For the quilting, we did straight lines with a walking foot down the center of each strip, which adds depth to the overall design. These prints are mostly Cotton+Steel basics, with some Art Gallery and Moda crossweave thrown in.You may notice that this matches our Modern Tuffet No. 2 quite well, and that’s due to the fact that we used the leftover strips from that project to make the entire pillow front.  Love using things up to the last!
Quite often, we don’t like to use the same fabrics for more than one or two projects.  That’s why these leftover fabrics are perfect for gifting!  Plus, isn’t it great to be able to make something fun for someone else?
