Proof Positive Plus Quilt

One great thing about being quilters is that the new babies in our family never arrive to this world without a baby quilt.  It’s always so exciting to plan the quilts, and think about the sweet new guy or gal on the way as we sew.  We never feel quite ready for the baby to come until the quilt is finished.  The newest addition to our family arrived last month, and little Sven was welcomed with this cute quilt.

Isn’t he the cutest little guy?!?  For his special quilt, we used our Proof Positive Quilt Tutorial as a jumping off point, but of course we couldn’t make it exactly the same as last time.  What’s the fun in that?

Since the adorable fabrics in this Big Sky fabric line (by Annie Brady for Moda) are larger scale, we didn’t want to cut the pieces up too small and lose the fantastic illustrations.  Instead of 2.5″ strips, we used 3.5″ strips and enlarged the pieces accordingly.  This makes the top and bottom squares of the plus 3.5″, and the cross pieces of the plus 3.5″ x 9.5″.

We used the same woodgrain quilting pattern that we used on our Snowball Fight Quilt for this one, to carry on the woodland theme.  We love how it adds so much texture to the quilt!  If you are a regular reader of our blog, you know that we love to back quilts that will be used on beds with flannel.  It just ups that cozy factor so much!

We really love Annie’s illustration style and think it’s just perfect for little kids.  Not too babyish, but still playful and whimsical.  The modern color palette is also what drew us toward this fabric line.

One thing we also love to do for quilts that will be washed often (let’s face it, little kids are messy!) is to use a machine stitched binding.  It holds up well to wear and tear, plus it has the added benefits of avoiding any hand stitching and saving you a few hours of work.  We have a little tutorial on that here: Machine Binding Tutorial.

Look at that yummy quilt roll!

The background fabric is our favorite off-white, Moda’s Bella Solid called Bleached White PFD.  The PFD stands for preferred for dyeing, but we’ve never actually used it for that.  It’s just the perfect warm white that matches just about everything, except Bright White.

We hope you’ve enjoyed this look at our Proof Positive Plus Quilt!  It’s really a fun thing to make baby quilts, and they go so much faster than larger quilts.  You can find the tutorial for the original baby quilt that inspired this one here: Proof Positive Quilt.  Remember that it uses smaller sized strips, so it’s great for jelly rolls and small scale prints.  We also made a pillow out of it that you can see at the end of that tutorial, which is an even quicker quilting project!

    1. So with these measurements, what was the finished size of the quilt? I love this pattern but I’m looking to make my quilt around 45×60…any suggestions?

    1. Hi! Me again! I’m finally prepping my quilt and not sure what dimensions to do those 1×2 block pieces. In the original size pattern those pieces are 2.5“ x 4.5“. But I’m going to make my square pieces 3.5 in.² so what dimensions would these 2-block pieces be?🤯
