Make This: Quick Striped Baby Quilt

Need to make a baby quilt in a hurry?  Here’s a super quick method for a primitive/vintage look that looks like it took bags of time, plus it’s self-binding so you don’t have to spend time on that part either.  Here’s all you need:  coordinating strips of fabric in various sizes, fine crochet thread, batting, and backing fabric.Striped Baby Quilt

We used a total of nine strips, ranging from 4″ to 7″ wide and 40″ long (basically the width of the fabric trimmed).  We sewed them together in the order we liked, cut backing and batting to match the size, and sewed it all together (leave a small opening for turning) with wrong sides facing.  Turn it right side out,  stitch the opening closed, and press the edges so they are nice and crisp.Striped Baby QuiltWith the crochet thread, sew the edges and along each strip with a straight running stitch.  We drew a couple of branches with leaves and a bird with a Frixion pen and stitched over the outline to add dimension. Striped Baby Quilt and Felt MobileWe also made some little birds from felt and a fabric and felt flower to gussy up a purchased mobile.  The attached ribbons fit right into the plastic arms, and you have a matching musical mobile for the nursery.

Striped Baby QuiltIt has a flannel backing to make it oh so soft and the hand stitching gives it that handmade look.  We know this is a pretty light tutorial, so if you have any questions, feel free to leave them in the comments below.

  1. Just dropping a line to say thank you for a great blog and great help at my quilting!

    1. We usually don’t prewash for quilts, since the fabrics should shrink equally. We have known flannels to shrink much more, though, so if you are worried about it, it wouldn’t hurt anything to prewash!

  2. Hello,
I am wanting to try this quilt as a VERY new beginner. Could you share the yardage for the fabrics that I would need to purchase to make this? And the rough final dimensions?

    Thank you!

    1. Hi Andrea,

It depends how many different fabrics you want to have in the quilt. The rough finished dimensions are 40″ x 50″. You could get 1/4 yard of 6 fabrics for the front and 50″ for the backing.
