Quilts We’ve Made: Trip Around the World

Trip Around the WorldA few years ago, Aunt Grace came out with this charming line of international travel themed 30’s fabric.  It was the perfect thing for a Trip Around the World Quilt.  There were also dolls of the world, dressed in international costume, which were the perfect size to fussy-cut and center in the block.

Trip Around the WorldAs the time, everyone was using the traditional Amish black as background, but I discovered that black kind of “kills” certain colors.  Instead, I found a really good navy and it was a good match.  Each square block is about 3 inches, so this is about a twin size quilt.

Trip Around the World QuiltAs the quilt grew, I also realized I needed more of the outside rows and less of the inside rows–sounds like a no-brainer, I know–but I had purchased the same amount of each print.  The backing goes along with the theme–it is a print of old fashioned travel suitcase labels.  This traditional quilt pattern is so easy to put together with a precut 2 1/2″ jelly roll and a coordinating solid fabric.
