Sprinkles Quilt Along: Week 1

It’s time for the Sprinkles Quilt Along! We hope you’re as excited about this one as us. Who doesn’t love a giant cupcake? We have three birthdays to celebrate in the next little while: The Cloth Parcel is turning 10(!), and we both have our birthdays this time of year. Diane’s is at the end of October, and Audrey’s is at the end of November. Celebrate with us by quilting along on the Sprinkles quilt!

As far as size goes, this cupcake isn’t really all that giant. The finished size is 45″ x 50″, which is perfect for a wall hanging or table topper. To start, gather your fabric and turn to page 13 in our Piece & Love Book. This week, all we will be doing is cutting out the fabric for the quilt. After all, we can’t spend too much time quilting when we have so much celebrating to do!

We kept most of the colors from the original quilt the same where we could, but the Birthday fabric line that we are using (affiliate link*) doesn’t have a green print (even though it’s in the confetti print). We substituted a light blue for the green in both the sprinkles and the cupcake wrapper. Everything else had a pretty similar look to the original, which is hard to do sometimes!

This quilt does have four little blocks that require you to cut a template piece. We try to avoid this whenever possible, but we could get that steep angle on the cupcake wrapper without it. Don’t worry, it’s totally doable and we’re here to help!

We made a photocopy of the template page onto regular printer paper, but you can also print on sturdy yardstick or trace it onto template plastic. Notice that we also use a different rotary cutter to cut paper to avoid dulling our fabric blade. Once you have the templates ready, cut the fabric out according to the book. We layer the fabric, paper template, and ruler and then cut along the outside edges of the paper.

Once you have all the pieces cut out you’re done for the week. Check back here next Monday for Week 2! In the meantime, you can share your progress in a couple of different ways:

  • On Instagram, use both #sprinklesqal and #theclothparcel hashtags in your post. You can also tag us @theclothparcel.
  • In our private Facebook group, you can share photos in a post or in the comments of any of our posts. You can also ask for help or advice there!

See you next week!
